I drew this back in March 2023 for the Journalist. My old chum Martin Rowson on the same subject, got it in the neck at the time from the usual sanctimonious humbugs for a cartoon that made an oblique reference to Goldman Sachs as a 'Vampire Squid'. Richard Sharp was very senior in that bank for many years before becoming Chair of the BBC. Rowson made an ill-advised apology to said humbugs, which sadly and unfortunately led the Guardian to introduce their ludicrous "Guidelines For Editorial Cartoonists" which made the absurd demand that all "difficult jokes and ideas" must be cleared by the editorial committee in the morning before the day of publication, at one stroke abolishing any hope of topicality in any editorial cartoon, and blatantly contradicting my entire experience of working for the paper. This led directly to my own sacking after 42 years over one cartoon and their subsequent refusal to publish any more of my work.
Plenty of tropes here but definitely no antisemitic ones. What is an "antisemitic trope" other than any trope that is used to promote antisemitism, or hatred of Jewish people? Any trope can be used for antisemitic purposes so should all tropes be thus disallowed?
